The forgotten history

Three times a year, the museum presents in its permanent itinerary a selection of documents from the rich archives of the Historic Defense Service in Rochefort

Workers or traders, nuns or actresses, many were those who contributed to the economic vitality of the port of Rochefort.

Low-skilled labor, otherwise subject to household care, women were initially confined to certain tasks or occupations, then entered the world of work fully, thanks to the shortage of men. Also the residents of the Hospice of the orphans of the Navy of Rochefort leave it, in 1951, "with an important baggage of knowledge, trousseau and money". However, only the tenuous and scattered testimonies in the archives remain, which already give rise to inequalities of treatment. The sources preserved by the Defense Historical Service remain to be explored to shed light on the role of women in the Arsenal, and thus to renew historiography.
