Residency project at the citadel with Gabrielle Manglou

As part of the third edition of the Territories EXTRA program, the National Maritime Museum and La Criée Center for Contemporary Art join forces. Together, they invite the artist Gabrielle Manglou to invest the site of the citadel of Port Louis for two periods of residence in the fall and spring, followed by an exhibition in the summer.
Invited to work from the heritage and museum components of the site, including the wealth of ties that unite Port Louis, Lorient and Reunion Island at the time of the East India Company in the seventeenth and eighteenth centuries, Gabrielle Manglou will develop a project with poetic title: Moor in the shade. This title resonates both with the maritime context of the citadel and Reunion Creole.
Feeding on the specific context of Port-Louis, Gabrielle Manglou will pursue with Amarrer in the shade the exploration of the notion of the vernacular, the relation to history as well as the notion of local and global, strong axes of his work. It relies on questions that are at once formal, pictorial, sociological, political, anthropological and plays on concepts such as acculturation, negation, value, status, loss, resilience, reparation, legitimacy, confusion.
Mooring in the shade, his proposal for research, creation and transmission to the citadel of Port Louis, will take place in two periods of residence:

  • from 14 to 31 October 2019,
  • then from 25 May to 12 June 2020.

The residency will be extended by an exhibition of the works produced, inaugurated the 11 June 2020 and open to the public until 27 September 2020.
This creative residency is also an opportunity for Gabrielle Manglou to introduce her visitors to the museum through meetings and workshops.
