Created in December 1827, the "marine museum" remains, for many years, essentially dedicated to the navy academy. It was not until the late nineteenthe century to see the establishment of a wider acquisition policy. The museum then turned resolutely towards diversified themes: marine trade and transatlantic shipping and pleasure boating and water sports, then scientific research and exploration of the world like the depths. All these areas are now part of the collection work that the National Marine Museum will take to reflect all of the maritime world and witness its evolution.
