The science of the galleys which contains all that concerns the construction, the armament, the maneuver, the fight and the navigation of the galleys

Jean-Antoine Barras from La Penne
(1650-1730)

This manuscript addressed to Louis XIV is part of the abundant work of Barras de La Penne (1650-1730). Constantly in search of protectors likely to advance his career in the galley corps, he was the author of numerous memoirs, maps and plans and a Dictionary of the Galleys which remained unfinished. Here he paints a complete and magnificently illustrated portrait of this navy at the end of the nineteenth century: construction, maneuver, history, vocabulary, etc. All aspects are addressed, and this by a skilled person, which gives this document a historical and documentary interest of the first level.
